“Strandbeest” Linkage
Theo Jansen’s “Strandbeest”
Purpose: The Strandbeest, created by Dutch artist Theo Jansen, is a kinetic sculpture. Its design is notable for energy efficiency, as it operates using minimal power and can run entirely on wind energy. Jansen’s linkage, which is still being optimized for use in mobile robotics and gait analysis, is classified as a single degree of freedom, planar, 11-mobile-link mechanism. This means that only the crank rotates, while all other linkages are fixed and move solely based on the crank’s circular motion. To study the mechanism, all supports and sails were removed to isolate the underlying linkage, which was recreated using a top-down assembly in SolidWorks. The resulting motion produces an ovoid footpath similar to organic or human-like movement, even with just a single leg.
